Legend . . . Book review

There has been a lot of hype surrounding the new film release of 'The Hunger Games', and rightly so, given the success of the book (which we love!) But we've also been hearing good things about 'Legend' by Marie Lu, so we asked Spinebreakers crew member Georgina what she thought . . .

I was slightly reluctant to starting this book, because I am one of those people who often judge a book by its cover or title; however it was definitely worth overcoming the title because I now consider it one of my favourites. For me, this book has many similarities to the ‘Matched’ trilogy by Ally Condie in the sense of a dystopian world with a corrupt society and a scandalous relationship by the main characters.

It follows the lives of perfect student June Whitaker and notorious criminal Day. June, having been raised into the military by her brother and late father, is already morally opposed to the crimes Day has committed but after he is the top suspect for her own brother’s murder, her hatred deepens. Day, wrongly accused of murder and led into a life of crime trying to oppose the corrupt and unruly dictatorship of their Elector, his plot begins to deepen and we begin to sympathise with his choices in life. As their lives become to entangle we see a multitude of emotions as a decision has to be made, follow the path of love or the perilous journey of revenge.

This book, consuming only a few hours, managed to link an entirely parallel universe to the lives of many teenagers. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-packed adventures. I consider this book a must read for any ‘Hunger Games’ or ‘Matched’ lover.
