We're all living in cash strapped times, and we like to save a bit of money but doing our own nails, however, it can be a little tricky, particularly when it comes to doing your hands, here's our handy guide to how to achieve the perfect nails . . .
1. Start by removing any old nail varnish but using a good quality, acetone free remover. We suggest Cutex Acetone Free Nail Polish Remover, blot it onto a cotton wool pad, hold over the nail your nail for a few seconds and then wipe off the varnish.
2. Once all of the varnish has been removed, run your nails under a tap to remove any residue solution, and then it's time to cute and file down your nails, we tend to go for a length just reaches the tips of our fingers.
3. Next it's time to soak your nails in warm water, place a little soap in the water and soak them for a couple of minutes, then using a nail brush clean away any dirt.
3. Painting your nails can dry them out so before applying a base coat apply a small amount of nail and cuticle cream and rub in. Our personal favourite is Burts Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle cream, it smells amazing whilst putting moisture back in at the same time!
4. Wipe off any excess moisturiser with a cotton pad otherwise your nail varnish will not coat your nail properly. Now its time to start applying the polish!
5. Start by applying a base coat, this will help to give a smooth surface to apply your chosen nail polish on to. Barry M - 3 in 1 Nail Paint is a base coat, top coat and also a nail hardener all for the amazing price of £2.99. Apply a base layer, making sure to start coating your nails at the cuticle and then sweep the brush towards the tip of your nail, leave to dry for 2 minutes.
6. Now it's time to apply your chosen colour, we love these shades by Zoya perfect for both toes and nails. Shake the bottle of nail polish to make sure the colour is evenly mixed, then, like with the base coat start by applying the colour at the cuticle and sweeping the brush towards the tip of your nail, painting each nail with two strokes. Leave to dry for at least 2-3 minutes and try not to do anything in this time, you don't want any last minute smudges!
Clockwise - Wednesday, a Light aqua shade; Lara, a magenta pink, perfect for toes; Arizona, a soft
orange cream; and Zuza, a metallic sparkling aqua.
7. One coat is usually enough, but if a second coat is needed wait 10-15 minutes for the first coat to dry fully.
8. Remove any polish that has gone on to your skin with a cotton bud dipped into nail polish remover.
9. Finally add a clear top coat of Barry M - 3 in 1 Nail Paint, this will help to stop the varnish chipping and give a glossy finish, leave to dry for at least 5-10 minutes, and then voila, your DIY manicure is complete!
